The Federal Surface Transportation Program is amended every several years through multiyear authorization acts (for example ISTEA, TEA-21, and Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). The current authorization is SAFETEA-LU for 2005-2009 and is the largest surface transportation investment totaling $244.1 billion. It authorizes federal surface transportation programs for highways, bridges, trails, safety, and transit projects.
