Project Overview

The Western Federal Lands Highway Division (WFLHD) of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), in cooperation with the Federal Lands Highway (FLH), Indian Reservation Roads (IRR) Program has prepared the design Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) package for the reconstruction of the Ivar's Bridge. The project objective is to replace the existing structure with a year round accessible clear span bridge. The existing bridge consists of a series of 21 culverts bridged with fill material and topped with a concrete bridge deck. The installation is overtopped by the stream occasionally and is failing due to scour of the fill material around the culverts. The need for the bridge appears to be subsistence uses. Overtopping creates a hardship for the locals as this is the only stream crossing available. Failure of the bridge would virtually eliminate the opportunity for subsistence usage on one side of the stream.
