Project Overview

The project is located on Snug Harbor Road, near Cooper Landing, in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, Alaska. This road provides access to recreational opportunities on the Chugach National Forest as well as local access for the community of Cooper Landing. The project will focus from the intersection of the Sterling Highway (Alaska Route 1), Mile Post (MP) 0.0 to the intersection of Campus Road (MP 1.8) that accesses Snug Harbor Senior Haven. The first 1.13 miles of the road is currently paved, the remaining portion of the road has an aggregate surface which creates dust problems. Safety is a concern for pedestrians and bicyclists along this portion of the road.

The project focuses on improving safety for bicyclists and reducing dust associated with the existing aggregate surface. The actions involve paving the Snug Harbor Road from Mile Post 1.13 to Campus Road, and constructing a separated bike trail along the north side of the road starting at the frontage road next to the Sterling Highway and crossing to the south side of the road past the Post Office.
