Project Description

The project includes roadway resurfacing, restoration, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of approximately 4.9 miles of roadway in Yosemite Valley, California. Work is included on El Portal Road and Valley Loop Road (Northside and Southside Drives), and Sentinel Drive. Work also includes realignment of 2,000 feet of Northside Drive, roundabout construction at the Village Drive intersection, reconstruction of the Camp 6 and Camp 4 parking lots, surfacing of the West of Lodge parking lot, drainage improvements, asphalt and aggregate trail construction, and utility work including waterline, sewer line, and electrical system installation.

El Portal Road

The primary project objectives will include 11-foot travel lanes and a 1-foot paved shoulder.

Valley Loop Road

The primary project objective succeeds in protecting sensitive natural and cultural resources, enhancing the visitor experience, and complying with the mandates of the 2014 Merced Wild and Scenic River Comprehensive Management Plan Record of Decision. Also it proposes repaving the Yosemite Valley Loop Road, improvements to roadside parking areas, rehabilitation of the existing culverts, and addition of new culverts. The following actions are elements of Alternative 2, the Selected Alternative, and reflect the changes to the proposed action due to public comment.

Purpose

El Portal Road

The purpose of the project is to repair and resurface existing roadway pavement, rehabilitate or replace adjacent drainage features (e.g., culverts, inlets, and ditches) on 0.60 mile of El Portal Road).

Valley Loop Road

The purpose of the project is to repair and resurface existing roadway pavement, rehabilitate or replace adjacent drainage features (e.g., culverts, diversion ditches, and retaining walls) and improve the condition of adjacent roadside parking along approximately 4.3 miles of the Yosemite Valley Loop Road in Yosemite Valley. No roadway widening (outside of the original road prism width of 22 feet), realignment, or changes to vehicular or pedestrian circulation patterns will be undertaken.
