South Entrance Wawona and Mariposa Grove Roads
The project included roadway resurfacing, restoration, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of approximately 2.8 miles of roadway in Yosemite National Park, Mariposa County, California. Work included roundabout construction at the intersection of Wawona Road and Mariposa Grove Road and drainage and site improvements.
The selected alternative was based upon consideration of the concerns and issues raised during the conservation planning and environmental impact analysis process, with due consideration for all public comments received during scoping as well as review of the Draft EIS. In light of applicable laws, regulations, and NPS guidance, the NPS had selected Alternative 2, South Entrance Hub for implementation.
The project goals are to protect resources; enhance interpretation of natural and cultural resources; improve wayfinding and safety and meet accessibility requirements. These requirements would improve access to comfort stations, parking areas, and on selected trails.
Comprehensive actions are needed to address the impacts of existing infrastructure, operations, and visitor use on the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias and to ensure that the Grove thrives and continues to provide inspiration and enjoyment for current and future generations.
