Cottonwood Pass West Side
Construction on the west side has started and is expected to be finished in the late fall of 2018. The road will be closed to all public traffic during construction. The closure will begin at the intersection of CR 209 and CR 742 and extend to the summit. Emergency vehicle access will be allowed at all times, as weather permits. The majority of the summit parking lot will remain open to the public, and can be accessed from Buena Vista to the east. The Continental Divide Trail will remain open and can be accessed from the eastern side of the pass. The Timberline Trail will remain open to trail users, but no access from the road will be permitted.

Federal Highway Administration, Central Federal Lands Highway Division (FHWA-CFLHD) in cooperation with Gunnison County, the U.S. Forest Service, Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests propose improvements to 12.5 miles of Cottonwood Pass Road. The improvements include widening, realignment, and paving the road. The standard typical cross-section of the road will consist of two, 11-foot wide travel lanes and 1-foot wide paved shoulders for a total width of 24 feet. The project will also be designed to provide a minimum 7-foot clear zone and additional rock fall ditch capacity.
The Cottonwood Pass East Side will be open in 2017, including the summit parking lot. The Cottonwood Pass West Side will be closed past the summit parking lot for construction.
