Cottonwood Pass Overview
Cottonwood Pass will remain closed the rest of 2018. The road will be open to traffic next year, on or around Memorial Day Weekend.

Where does the closure start and end?
The road is closed from the Avalanche Trailhead parking lot (Chaffee County side) to the intersection of CR 209 and CR 742 (Gunnison County side). There will be no public access to the Collegiate Peak Campgrounds, Denny Creek Parking Lot, Holy Water Parking Lot, the Summit, Continental Divide Trail, Timberline Trail, or areas in the vicinity. Please refer to the Year 2018 closure map for more information. Emergency vehicle access will be allowed at all times, as weather permits.
Trail users already on the Continental Divide Trail and Timberline Trail will be allowed to the cross the project, but will not be able to leave the trails or be resupplied. Access from Buena Vista will be open to the Cottonwood Lake area, Avalanche Trailhead Parking Lot, and businesses along Chaffee County Road 306. When work is occurring, traffic may experience delays up to 20 minutes.
Access will be open from Gunnison/Almont/Crested Butte to the Taylor Park area, including local businesses. There will be no construction-related delay to traffic.

Will the Pass be open this fall?
Unfortunately, it will not be open this fall. We understand this is an inconvenience, and we thank you for your patience!
Will snowmobiles be allowed on the Pass this winter?
Yes, just like in the 2017-18 winter season, snowmobiles will be allowed on the pass once construction activities are suspended.

The Federal Highway Administration, Central Federal Lands Highway Division (FHWA-CFLHD) is currently working on two separate, but related projects on Cottonwood Pass.
The first project is in cooperation with Gunnison County, the U.S. Forest Service, Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests to improve 12.5 miles of Cottonwood Pass Road from the intersection of CR 209 and CR 742 and extend to the summit. This project is currently under construction. For more information, please visit the Cottonwood Pass West Side project page.
The second project is in cooperation with Chaffee County, the U.S. Forest Service, Pike and San Isabel National Forests to improve 18.5 miles of Cottonwood Pass Road from the summit, where the CO FLAP 209(1) Cottonwood Pass ends, east to County Road 321 at the Town of Buena Vista western limit.
