Project Overview

The Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration, in cooperation with the Hawaii Department of Transportation is developing a project located on the Kaumualii Highway, Route 50, at M.P. 16.57, the Hanapepe River Bridge, on the Island of Kauai.

A Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) has been prepared pursuant to HRS Chapter 343 (as amended), and Hawaii Administrative Rules Title 11, Chapter 200.   The document is available for download and review by clicking on the All Documents link on the left side of this page.

The project is located on the Kaumualii Highway (Route 50), the coastal perimeter road serving the west side. The subject bridge crosses the Hanapepe River near Hanapepe Bay. The project improves the safety and reliability of the Hanapepe Bridge, through rehabilitation or replacement, addressing bridge width, load capacity, bridge railing and transitions, bridge approaches and to mitigate the effects of scour.

Update 10/1/19

Construction of the bridge foundations (drilled shaft) are currently under-way. The contractor has completed 3 of the 16 drilled shaft foundations and will continue work on the shafts through November 2019. Impacted overhead utilities that conflict with the bridge construction are all nearly temporarily relocated allowing construction to progress without delay.

Update 5/1/19

Construction of the roadway by-pass has been completed and traffic is currently detoured onto the temporary by-pass. Temporary utility relocations are underway, anticipated to be completed in late May.

Activity look-ahead: Utility relocations, existing bridge strengthening to support drilled shaft foundation construction, bridge demolition.

Update 2/1/19

Temporary By-pass Bridge: The temporary bridge and bridge deck have been placed. Work on the temporary bridge is considered complete. Project closeout procedures are currently underway. Construction of the temporary bridge roadway approaches will be completed by the contractor working on the permanent bridge construction.

Permanent Bridge: The permanent bridge construction contract was awarded to WW Clyde on April 13, 2018. The construction Notice to Proceed was issued on August 6, 2018. The contract duration is 684 Calendar days which will establish a contract completion date of June 20, 2020. The contractor has mobilization to the project site and is currently working on the construction of the approach roads accessing the temporary bridge including temporary relocation of utilities.
