HI STP SR50(1) HANAPEPE RIVER BRIDGE

Project Overview

The Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration, in cooperation with the Hawaii Department of Transportation is developing a project located on the Kaumualii Highway, Route 50, at M.P. 16.57, the Hanapepe River Bridge, on the Island of Kauai.

A Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) has been prepared pursuant to HRS Chapter 343 (as amended), and Hawaii Administrative Rules Title 11, Chapter 200.   The document is available for download and review by clicking on the All Documents link on the left side of this page.

The proposed project is located on the Kaumualii Highway (Route 50), the coastal perimeter road serving the west side. The subject bridge crosses the Hanapepe River near Hanapepe Bay. The project would improve the safety and reliability of the Hanapepe Bridge, through rehabilitation or replacement, addressing bridge width, load capacity, bridge railing and transitions, bridge approaches and to mitigate the effects of scour.

Construction: There is no new information to share at this time.


Update 3/1/18

Construction: Funding has been identified for construction of the permanent Hanapepe River Bridge.

A MATOC contract has been awarded to support construction of this project. The project is currently being bid amongst MATOC contract holders, with award anticipated in April 2018. A Notice to Proceed will be dependent on completion of the temporary bridge project, described below, targeted for May 2018.

The temporary by-pass bridge project was awarded to Hawaiian Dredging on June 1, 2017. The temporary by-pass bridge will be constructed to provide traffic access during construction of the permanent bridge. Ongoing construction activities include construction of the roadway approaches to support driving pipe pile to establish the temporary bridge foundation. Once the foundation has been completed, an ACROW bridge will be assembled as the future bypass for public traffic during construction of the permanent bridge. The temporary bridge will be removed and the site will be restored to precondition upon completion of the permanent bridge project. The temporary bridge project is anticipated to be completed in April 2018.
