HI STP SR50(1) HANAPEPE RIVER BRIDGE

Project Overview

The Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration, in cooperation with the Hawaii Department of Transportation is developing a project located on the Kaumualii Highway, Route 50, at M.P. 16.57, the Hanapepe River Bridge, on the Island of Kauai.

A Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) has been prepared pursuant to HRS Chapter 343 (as amended), and Hawaii Administrative Rules Title 11, Chapter 200.   The document is available for download and review by clicking on the All Documents link on the left side of this page.

Island of Kauai, HI

The proposed project is located on the Kaumualii Highway (Route 50), the coastal perimeter road serving the west side. The subject bridge crosses the Hanapepe River near Hanapepe Bay. The project would improve the safety and reliability of the Hanapepe Bridge, through rehabilitation or replacement, addressing bridge width, load capacity, bridge railing and transitions, bridge approaches and to mitigate the effects of scour.


Update 6/1/17:

Environment: The environmental document has been completed for this project.

Project Development: The 95% design package has been completed and the project team is working to complete the 100% project design package.

Utilities: Coordination is underway with the utility agencies to prepare agreements for temporary and permanent relocations.

Right of Way: Right of Way acquisition is currently underway.

Construction: Funding has been identified for construction of a temporary by-pass bridge supporting traffic for construction of the permanent bridge. Funding for the permanent bridge construction has not been secured.

The solicitation for advertisement of the temporary by-pass bridge has closed. Project award is anticipated in June 2017 with Project construction anticipated to begin in late July 2017.


Update 5/1/17

Environment: The public comment period for the Draft EA has closed. The final EA FONSI was authorized on March 24, 2017 and is available for download by accessing the "All Documents" tab on this webpage.

Project Development: On-going design activities are focused towards supporting the environmental, utility, and right of way processes. The 95% design package has been completed and the project team is working to complete the 100% project design package.

Right of Way: Right of way acquisition is currently underway.

Utilities: Coordination is underway with the utility agencies to prepare agreements for temporary and permanent relocations.

Construction: Funding has been identified for this project. The project solicitation is planned for issuance in August 2017.
