HI STP SR50(1) HANAPEPE RIVER BRIDGE

Project Overview

The Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration, in cooperation with the Hawaii Department of Transportation is developing a project located on the Kaumualii Highway, Route 50, at M.P. 16.57, the Hanapepe River Bridge, on the Island of Kauai.

A Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) has been prepared pursuant to HRS Chapter 343 (as amended), and Hawaii Administrative Rules Title 11, Chapter 200.   The document is available for download and review by clicking on the All Documents link on the left side of this page.

The proposed project is located on the Kaumualii Highway (Route 50), the coastal perimeter road serving the west side. The subject bridge crosses the Hanapepe River near Hanapepe Bay. The project would improve the safety and reliability of the Hanapepe Bridge, through rehabilitation or replacement, addressing bridge width, load capacity, bridge railing and transitions, bridge approaches and to mitigate the effects of scour.


Update 9/1/17:

Construction: Funding has been identified for construction of the permanent Hanapepe River bridge.

A MATOC contract has been awarded to support construction of this project. The project will be bid amongst MATOC contract holders in September/October 2017, with award anticipated in November 2017. A notice to proceed will be dependent on completion of the temporary bridge project, described below, targeted for January 2018.

The temporary by-pass bridge project was awarded to Hawaiian Dredging on June 1, 2017. The temporary by-pass bridge will be constructed to provide traffic access during construction of the permanent bridge. On site construction activities are planned to begin, dependent on the contractor operations, in late September/October 2017. The project is anticipated to take 5.5 months to complete.


Update 8/1/17:

Environment: The environmental document has been completed for this project. The final EA FONSI is available for download by accessing the All Documents tab on this webpage.

Project Development: The Project 100% plan documents will be completed in August 2017.

Right of Way: Right of way acquisition is currently underway with affected landowners.

Utilities: Coordination is underway with the utility agencies to prepare agreements for temporary and permanent relocations.

Construction: Funding has been identified for construction of the permanent Hanapepe River bridge. A MATOC contract has been awarded to support construction of this project. Construction: Funding has been identified for construction of a temporary by-pass bridge supporting traffic for construction of the permanent bridge. Funding for the permanent bridge construction has not been secured.

The solicitation for advertisement of the temporary by-pass bridge has closed. Project award is anticipated in June 2017 with Project construction anticipated to begin in late July 2017.
