Hilea Stream Bridge

Project Overview

The Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration in cooperation with the Hawaii Department of Transportation is developing a project located on the Mamalahoa Highway, Route 11, at M.P. 57.7, the Hilea Stream Bridge, on the Island of Hawaii.

A Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) has been prepared pursuant to HRS Chapter 343 (as amended), and Hawaii Administrative Rules Title 11, Chapter 200. The Hilea Stream Bridge is located on the Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11), mile post 57.7, in the Kau District. The project improves the safety and reliability the timber bridge, through rehabilitation or replacement, addressing bridge width, load capacity, bridge railing and transitions.

Update 2/1/20

HDCC has completed construction of the concrete footings for the Hilea Stream Bridge. HDCC also completed both abutment walls. Structure excavation for the foundations has been performed at Ninole Stream Bridge at Abutment 2.

Activity Look ahead
Ninole: Safety Measures, Additional Structure Excavation, Geophysical Survey, Probing & Grouting (if necessary), Footing/Wall Reinforcement Installation, Footing Concrete Pours, Fabrication of Prestressed Planks.

Hilea: Fabrication of Prestressed Girders, Transportation and Erection of Prestressed Girders, Wingwall Reinforcement Installation, Wingwall Concrete Pour, Structural Concrete Backfill

Update 10/1/19

On-site construction operations are anticipated to resume in October 2019 with continued construction on the new bridge foundations.

Traffic Management
HDCC transitioned public traffic to bypass bridges on 03/26/19 and 03/27/19. Appropriate TTC signage, pavement markings, and devices have been installed according to the accepted Traffic Control Plan and MUTCD. The speed limit at each bypass is reduced to 25 MPH.
