HI STP SR56(1) KAPAA STREAM BRIDGE & MAILIHUNA INT

Project Overview

The Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration in cooperation with the Hawaii Department of Transportation is developing a project located on the Kuhio Highway, Route 56, near M.P. 10, the Kapaa Stream Bridge and Mailihuna Road intersection, on the Island of Kauai.

A Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) has been prepared pursuant to HRS Chapter 343 (as amended), and Hawaii Administrative Rules Title 11, Chapter 200. Island of Kauai, HI

The proposed project is located on the Kuhio Highway (Route 56) near mile post 10. The project would improve the safety and reliability of the Kapaa Stream Bridge, through rehabilitation or replacement, addressing bridge width, load capacity, bridge railing and transitions, and bridge approaches. The project also proposes to improve the highway intersection at Mailihuna Road, which would include roadway widening, lighting, signing, pavement markings, drainage, traffic signal installation, and other improvements.


Update 7/1/17:

Environment: The final EA FONSI was submitted for OEQC publication on Tuesday April 11, 2017.

Project Development: On-going design activities include development of the 70% plans supporting a roundabout configuration at Malihuna Road.

Right of Way: Right of way acquisition is currently underway with affected landowners.

Utilities: Coordination is underway with the utility agencies to prepare agreements for temporary and permanent relocations.

Construction: Funding has not been identified for this project. Project funding is dependent on availability with consideration of other statewide priorities.

Update 5/1/17

Environment: The final EA FONSI was submitted for OEQC publication on Tuesday April 11, 2017.

Project Development: On-going design activities are focused towards supporting the utility, and right of way processes.

Right of Way: Right of way acquisition is currently underway.

Utilities: Coordination is underway with the utility agencies to prepare agreements for temporary and permanent relocations.

Construction: Funding has not been identified for this project. Project funding is dependent on availability with consideration of other statewide priorities.
