US Route 1 - Fort Belvoir
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, in cooperation with Fairfax County, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir, and the Virginia Department of Transportation are near completion on an approximately 3.6 mile long road improvement project between Mount Vernon Highway and Telegraph Road. The project included widening the corridor from four to six lanes. In addition to the widening the project consisted of adding turn lanes, upgrading signalization, adding a median able to accommodate future bus rapid transit as well as mitigation for numerous adjacent cultural and natural resources. A section of the existing roadway was realigned to avoid a National Historic Landmark property. A lengthened and raised bridge across Accotink Creek was provided to address frequent and hazardous roadway flooding. On road and multi-use bicycle and pedestrian access was also included in this project. The existing two lanes of through traffic were maintained during peak hours for the length of the construction period.
PROJECT BENEFITS: The project provides improved local and regional public access to Fort Belvoir and its recently constructed state of the art hospital. The improvements provide more convenient and efficient access from I-95 and the Fairfax County Parkway to Fort Belvoir.
CONSTRUCTION STATUS: Construction work started in June 2013. The roadway, trail and sidewalk improvements were fully open to the public on June 15, 2017. Final completion date was in January 18, 2018. Project Ribbon Cutting scheduled by Fairfax County on August 2, 2017.
